Elanco-Global HealthShare Meeting July 19, 2012 : On July 19th, 2012, Mr. Somu Kumar, Director of Animal Health for Elanco, visited Global HealthShare staff and members. A meeting, hosted by the UC Davis School of Management, gave Mr. Kumar an opportunity to learn about Global HealthShare's Rural Tech program. Rural Tech is a program to improve the health and livelihoods of smallholder dairy framers in the developing world. The Rural Tech program is headed by Dr. James Cullor, professor of veterinary medicine at UC Davis.

WRIHC Seattle WA, April 28-29, 2012 : On April 28-29, 2012, the Global HealthShare (GHS) team (Megan Doyle, Editha Setaiwan and Dr. Raymond Rodriguez, GHS director) attended the 9th annual Western Regional International Health Conference at the University of Washington, Seattle WA. The conference brought together researchers, healthcare provided and policy makers actively involved in reducing health disparities around the world. The two-day even features speakers such as Kavit Ramdas, Stanford University, Tim Brewer, McGill University, Guy Stallworthy, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and other individuals recognized for their contributions to promoting global health and social justice.

ICBiotech-Osaka University Visit : On December 15-16, 2011, professor Rodriguez, CENG director and GSH executive director, visited the International Center for Biotechnology (ICBiotech) at Osaka University, Osaka Japan. Professor Rodriguez's host was professor Kazuhiro Fujiyama, chair of the Applied Microbiology Laboratory at ICBiotech. Professor Rodriguez made a presentation to students and faculty entitled: Diet-Genome Interactions: An Example of Multi-Scale Biology and Cross-Kingdom Regulation." Professor Rodriguez also met with graduate students and staff to discuss the various research projects at ICBiotech. Research at the Applied Microbiology Laboratory focuses on the production of recombinant pharmaceutical proteins in yeasts, insect cells and plants. Their research focuses specifically on the genetics and biochemistry of protein glycosylation in heterologous expression systems. The Lab employs knock-out and knock-in technology to manipulate glycosylation pathways in these hosts to produce safer and more effective recombinant proteins.

Center Intern Receives College Citation : On May 28, 2011, Mr. Quoc Sinh Le received the College of Biological Sciences Departmental Citation in Molecular and Cell Biology. Sinh was an undergraduate intern in the Center of Excellence in Nutritional Genomics working under the supervision of Center scientists, Drs. Liping Huang, Somen Nandi and Center Director, Raymond Rodriguez. Sinh was one of 23 students to receive this prestigious award from the College. The Departmental Citations for Outstanding Performance are awarded to students who have achieved academic excellence in their majors and demonstrated exceptional skill and creativity in the research laboratory. Students must be nominated by faculty members in their major to be considered for the award. Nominees are then reviewed and selected by the University Committee on Undergraduate Scholarships, Honors and Prizes based their academic record and supporting letters from their research professor. Director Receives Honorary Doctorate : On December 14, 2009, the Nara Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST) presented Raymond Rodriguez, professor in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology with an honorary doctorate of science degree, the first in the institute’s 20-year history. The award was made in recognition of his contributions to the field of biotechnology and for his efforts in establishing the successful academic exchange program between NAIST and the College of Biological Sciences at UC Davis. Professor Rodriguez was the principle organizer of the program within the College of Biological Sciences and served as the faculty contact from 2001 to 2006. The exchange program now provides research and educational opportunities for UC Davis and NAIST faulty and graduate students in the areas of biological, material and information sciences. The award ceremony at NAIST was arranged to coincide with International Day and the ceremony was attend by about 200 graduate students, faculty and researchers from around the world. The attendees also included numerous dignitaries from the various consulates in Osaka Japan. Professor Rodriguez was presented with a bouquet of genetically modified, blue roses courtesy of Suntory Corporation who have been supporting NAIST biotechnology program for several years. In 2009 and again in 2010, NAIST was ranked first in research and education among all national universities in Japan. This ranking was based on performance-based evaluation by the National University Corporation. NAIST was also ranked first in Japan in terms of grants-in-aid for scientific research for the revenues generated by patents filed by NAIST faculty.

Cal Poly Pomoma/UC Davis 2009 Nutritional Genomics Conference : "This program was probably the best of its type that I have attended. The overall speaker quality was excellent, and the diverse expertise represented successfully achieved the goal of getting each of the groups to look at the issues through different lenses. The conference set the stage for all of us to be thinking of where the field is going." G.S. On November 12-14, 2009, the Department of Human Nutrition and Food Science at Cal Poly Pomona and the Center of Excellence in Nutritional Genomics at UC Davis, co-organized a nutritional genomics conference entitled, “The Impact of Dietary Regulation of Gene Function on Human Disease.” The conference was held at the Kellogg West Conference Center on the Cal Poly Pomona Campus and approximately 100 individuals were in attendance. The goal of the conference was to provide a forum for researchers, scientists, educators, dietitians, health care professionals and policy makers to discuss the current status of nutritional genomic research. Renowned experts in the field addressed the latest scientific findings on the mechanisms underlying diet-genome interactions. Challenges to the potential application of nutritional genomics to improve the nutritional value of the food supply and to address public health issues were emphasized throughout the three-day program. The final session of the conference identified future directions for nutritional genomics research as well as challenges and opportunities for improving global health and wellness by preventing, delaying or mitigating chronic diseases and cancer with diet. The long-term goal of the conference is to promote the use nutrition to prevent some of the catastrophic health outcomes currently overtaking our children and impacting their future health and longevity. MSU 2008 Nutritional Genomics Conference : Nutrigenomics: Diet and DNA. The 3rd Annual Conference on Nutritional Genomics Michigan State University, East Lansing Michigan. 2007 Bruce Ames Young Investigator Prize : The Bruce Ames Young Investigator Prize was established in 2004 in recognition of Professor Bruce Ames’ life-long contribution to human health through biochemical, genetic and nutrition research. . The prize is a cash award of $500 for the best scientific poster displayed at the 2007 Bruce Ames International Symposium on Nutritional Genomics. In the spirit and tradition of Professor Ames’ approach to improving global health and wellbeing, the prize is intended to recognize undergraduate and graduate researchers investigating diet-genome interactions as they relate to health and health disparities. This year’s prize was awarded to two students: Jussle Del Rosario and Gabriel Paulino. Jussle DEL ROSARIO is a senior at UC Davis majoring in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. The title of his winning poster is: “Lunasin upregulation of UGT1A genes suggests a chemopreventive effect.” Jussle has been working in the Bioinformatics Shared Resources Core of the Center of Excellence in Nutritional Genomics since winter quarter 2007. During that time he was the recipient of a President's Undergraduate Fellowship grant. Jussle is also a student advisor for the health and biological sciences. Gabriel PAULINO is a postdoctoral fellow in Dr. Helen Raybould’s lab at the Veterinary School of Medicine in the department of Anatomy, Physiology and Cell Biology. His poster was entitled: “Can diet influence the gene expression of appetite.” After receiving his M.S. in Life Sciences Engineering and in Research in Nutrition from the Institut National Agronomique Paris-Grignon (France) in 2005, he spent 2 years getting his PhD, in collaboration with Agro Paris Tech (France) and UC Davis, studying how the brain and the guts communicate to detect the nutrients in the small intestine, and how this communication can be modified after chronic ingestion of fat potentially leading to obesity. In September 2007, Gabriel enrolled in the Business Development Certificate Program at the UC Davis Graduate School of Management. He is learning how to bring research discoveries to the market.

Undergraduate Interns attend the 33rd West Coast Biological Science Undergraduate Research Conference : On April 12, 2008 three UC Davis undergraduates attended the 33rd annual West Coast Biological Sciences Undergraduate Research Conference (WCBSURC) at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego CA. The attendees included Ms. Briana Juhlin, Jussle Del Rosario and Edward Sanchez. Ms. Juhlin and Mr. Del Rosario are interns in the Center of Excellence in Nutritional Genomics and Mr. Sanchez is an intern with Dr. Robert Fairclough in the Center for Neuroscience in the School of Medicine at UC Davis. Mr. Del Rosario made an oral research presentation entitled: Epigenetic Interaction of Lunasin with the UGTIA Gene Family and Its Potential Chemopreventive Consequences. The highlight of the conference was the keynote address by Dr. Francis Collins, director of the National Human Genome Research Institute at the NIH entitled: Genomics and the Future of Medicine and Society. The WCBSUC is the oldest, ongoing conference of its kind in the nation. The main objectives of the conference are: 1) to provide an intercollegiate forum for the presentation by undergraduate researchers of original data generated in the fields of biology and biochemistry; and 2) to foster intercollegiate interactions among students and faculty who share a commitment to undergraduate research in the biological sciences. Established in 1976 by Dr. William Eisinger, Professor of Biology at Santa Clara University, the WCBSUC has been hosted by a number of institutions including Santa Clara University, Colorado College, Loyola Marymount University, Occidental College, Santa Clara University, the University of California, Irvine and the University of San Francisco. Over 134 colleges and universities in twenty-four states have participated in the WCBSUR Conferences since its inception.

Elena was one of thirteen students to receive the citation in genetics and Jussle was one of 24 to receive the citation in Molecular and Cell Biology. Students must be nominated by faculty members in their major to be considered for the award. BSRC-Korea University Collaboration : In 2007, the Bioinformatics Shared Resources Core (BSRC) of the Center of Excellence in Nutritional Genomics at UC Davis entered into a collaboration with Professor Sung-Joon Lee of Korea University to analyze the results of a microarray study on ApoE2 knockout/knockin mice fed control and high fat diets. Dr. Lee’s graduate student, Ms. Hee Jin Jun, spent the Fall Quarter, 2007 working with Senior Bioinformaticist, Dr. Kevin Dawson to analyze the results of this study. After her farewell dinner at Sushi Unlimited in Davis, Ms. Jun returned to Korea University on December 23, 2007. Dr. Dawson and Hee Jin made excellent progress on this project and publications are anticipated in 2008. We enjoyed working with Hee Jin and we wish all the best with her Ph.D. project.

UC Davis Delegation to Taiwan : On November 24, 2007, UC Davis Chancellor Larry Vanderhoef and Professor William Lucas, Chair of the Department of Plant Biology led a delegation to Taiwan to lay the groundwork for an academic exchange program with the National Chung Hsing University (NCHU). Accompanying Chancellor Vanderhoef and Professor Lucas were Professor Ken Burtis, Dean of the College of Biological Science, Professor Winston Ko, Dean of the Division of Mathematical and Physical Sciences, Professor Neal Van Alfen, Dean of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, Dr. Jackie Gervay-Hague, professor of chemistry, Bryan M. Jenkins, professor, biological and agricultural engineering and Dr. Robert Kerr, Assistant Vice Provost. Representing the Center of Excellent in Nutritional Genomics was director and professor of molecular and cellular biology, Raymond Rodriguez. In addition to meetings with key administrators and faculty at the NCHU, the UC Davis delegation met with representatives at the Academia Sinica, the Taiwan Ministry of Education and the National Taiwan University. The delegation also participated in the Third International Symposium on Biocatalysis and Biotechnology at the NCHU on November 28-29, 2007. Three members of the delegation made presentations at the symposium. Professor Rodriguez made a presentation entitled “Genomic Transduction and the Diet-Gene Paradox: Implications for Nutritional Genomics and Foods for Health.” Professor Jenkins spoke on “Prospects for Bioenergy in California: Potentials and Challenges for Sustainable Development” and Professor Gervay-Hague presented a lecture entitled “Funtionalized Nanoplatforms as Decoys for Viral Attachment and Localization.” The delegation also had an opportunity to visit sites of national and historical importance in Taiwan including Sun Moon Lake, the Chung Tai Chan Monastery in Taichung and Taipei 101 building in Taipei.

Bruce Ames Symposium Student Volunteers : “Many thanks for allowing me the opportunity to participate in The Second Bruce Ames International Symposium on Nutritional Genomics. I had a fabulous experience, meeting new investigators and learning in an area that is certainly not my expertise. You and your colleagues (the students as well) at the UCD Center were tremendous hosts for the symposium.” Comment from a Symposium participant. As you can see from the comment above, the Second Bruce Ames International Symposium on Nutritional Genomics was a tremendous success. Now that the symposium is behind us it is time to thank all of those who gave of the time and energy to make sure that everything went smooth that our symposium guests felt at home on the campus and in our city. In addition to the superb organizational skills of our grant manager, Ms. Yolanda Cortez, I want to thank those wonderful UC Davis student volunteers who did everything from airport pickups to handing out lunch boxes. Their performance was so exception that Dr. Gail Kauwell made special mention of it during the Saturday afternoon symposium session. On Wednesday, December 5, 2005, our student volunteers were invited to an appreciation dinner in the Board Room of the Palm Court Hotel in Davis. In attendance were: Sana Naveed, Rachaell Castro, Ryan Sheldon, Solomon Young, Briana Sawyer, Elena Endrukaite, Samantha Ponce, Giovanne Escoto, Regina Abella, Fiona Scott, Christina Wyman, Una Fan and Salvador Coral. Not present were Daniel Ayer, Phillip Kim, Kumitaa Theva Das and Ms. Rita Mendez. It was a memorable evening of great food, fellowship and speeches. 2007 Bruce Ames International Symposium on Nutritional Genomics : The highpoint for the Center in 2007 was the 2nd Bruce Ames International Symposium on Nutritional Genomics held on the UC Davis campus on October 12-14, 2007. The Center, together with the College of Biological Sciences, hosted approximately 350 participants from around the US and 10 nations for a series of workshops and seminars dealing with the complexities of diet x gene interactions. Former UC Davis graduate student, Dr. Roger Newton, founder of the Esperance Family Foundation and co-discoverer of Lipitor was the lead sponsor for the symposium. The three-day event covered a wide range of topics related to nutrition, genomics and health. The theme for this year’s symposium was “Resolving the Diet-Gene Paradox”. Speakers and attendees engaged in lively discussions about how diet and genetics interact and how certain constituent of diet such as vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals can alter gene activity in predictable and coordinated fashion to promote health and prevent disease. The kickoff speaker for the symposium was Professor Bruce Ames who spoke about “hidden hunger” and how the prevalence of vitamin/mineral deficiencies in children of low-income families can rob other organs and tissue of these essential nutrients setting the stage for late-stage chronic diseases. Other notable symposium speakers were Dr. I. Sadaf Farooqi of Cambridge University who is recognized internationally for her pioneering work on leptin and obesity. Harvard professor, Walter Willett, spoke on the four paradigms of cancer and Dr. Joseph Baur also of Harvard spoke on resveratrol, a polyphenolic in wine, and its role in promoting longevity in mammals. Dr. Dave Marin of the Children’s Hospital of Oakland Research Institute reported on his recent findings that fetal nutrition in mice can produce epigenetic effects that may be passed to daughters and granddaughters. The concept of the “grandmaternal” effect has raised a number of questions about the long-term impact of poor maternal nutrition in humans. On Saturday evening, Dr. Dean Ornish, director of the Preventive Medicine Research Institute spoke on the comprehensive changes in gene activity as a result of diet and lifestyle changes and how these changes could reduce risk of prostate cancer. Dr. Ornish was introduced by popular West Coast chef and restaurateur, Isabel Cruz, who has been recognize by Maria Shiver as one of California’s most remarkable women for her efforts to promote healthy eating. The symposium concluded on Sunday morning with presentations on the genetics of human taste perception and genetic variants in humans that increase risk for heart attack in response to high coffee consumption. Professor Sven Ebbesson of the University of Alaska reported on a twenty-year dietary intervention program with the Alaskan Eskimo who suffer from high rates of type 2 diabetes and heart disease as a result of cultural and lifestyle changes. The final speaker of the symposium was professor Judith Gilbride of NYU, immediate past president of the American Dietetic Association, who called on registered dieticians and researchers to work together to get reliable and current information about nutritional genomics out to the public. All in all, the symposium was a fitting conclusion to a very busy and productive year for the Center.
